Pet Detective Movie Review: Sharafudheen and Anupama Parameswaran’s Comedy Is Fun in Parts but Not Fully Funny

The Malayalam movie Pet Detective, starring Sharafudheen, Anupama Parameswaran, and Vinay Forrt, is a light comedy thriller that tries to mix humor with mystery. Directed by debut filmmaker Praneesh Vijayan, the film offers some entertaining moments but doesn’t quite deliver the full fun of classic Malayalam comedies.

Story

After escaping from an underworld don named Peter Sambay, private detective Jose Alula (Renji Panicker) returns to Kerala and opens a small detective agency. However, he’s more interested in writing a crime novel than solving cases. His son Tony (Sharafudheen) takes over the agency, but he’s not very good at his job — even his girlfriend Kaikeyi (Anupama Parameswaran) doubts his skills.

Things change when Tony and his assistant Sanoop (Joemon Jyothir) get involved in the case of a missing girl linked to the smuggling of exotic fish worth ₹30 crore. To clear their names and prove themselves as real detectives, they must solve the mystery — but standing in their way is police officer Rajat Menon (Vinay Forrt), who’s also investigating the same case.

Review: Partly Fun, Partly Funny

Pet Detective tries to bring back the vibe of old Malayalam comedies like CID Moosa (2003) and Vettam (2004). However, while those films embraced full-blown craziness, this one feels a bit hesitant. The result is a movie that’s sometimes fun and sometimes funny — but not both at once.

The chemistry between Sharafudheen, Anupama Parameswaran, and Vinay Forrt works well, but the humor doesn’t always land. The weak writing and underdeveloped characters of Kaikeyi and Rajat affect the film’s emotional connection.

Technical Aspects

  • Cinematography by Anend C Chandran gives the movie a stylish look.
  • Music by Rajesh Murugesan adds life to several scenes.
  • Editing by Abhinav Sunder Nayak is sharp in parts but lacks overall flow.

Final Verdict

While Pet Detective doesn’t reach the level of classic Malayalam comedies, it’s still a decent attempt with some entertaining moments and unique visuals. If you enjoy light detective comedies with a quirky storyline, this film might be worth a one-time watch.

Verdict: Average entertainer – partly fun, partly funny.
Box Office Collection: ₹9.4 crore (approx.)
Budget: Not announced officially
