The new vampire movie Thamma, starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna, has just been released. It was lucky enough to grab the important Diwali holiday release slot this year. This holiday spot was made famous by the huge success of the previous horror-comedy hit, Stree 2, which came out last year.
However, the opening day numbers show that Thamma couldn’t quite keep up with its predecessor.
The Opening Day Comparison
Thamma was released on a Tuesday, the day after Diwali. This is a good release day because many people have the day off from work and school. Despite this holiday advantage, Thamma only managed to earn ₹24 crore (240 million Indian Rupees) on its first day in India.
When we compare this to Stree 2, the difference is huge. Stree 2 had an opening day collection of ₹51.80 crore. This means Thamma’s opening collection is less than half of what Stree 2 made. Furthermore, Stree 2 also earned an extra ₹8.50 crore from paid preview screenings before its main release.
Stree 2 went on to become an all-time blockbuster. After a long 11-week run, its total earnings in India reached an incredible ₹597.99 crore. This allowed it to pass the previous record held by Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan (₹582.31 crore) to become the highest-grossing Hindi film in Indian history.
Thamma’s Role in the Horror-Comedy Universe
Thamma is part of the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe—a series of interconnected scary and funny movies produced by Dinesh Vijan. Despite some mixed reviews from critics, the buzz around being part of this popular universe is expected to help Thamma attract more viewers and grow its collections over time.
This has happened before, most recently with Munjya.
- Munjya’s Success: The 2024 film Munjya focused on a scary CGI ghost character and featured newer actors. It opened with a slow start of only ₹4 crore. However, it quickly picked up speed thanks to great word-of-mouth. Munjya eventually had a six-week run that totaled ₹101.60 crore, making it a massive success and securing its spot in the highly respected ₹100 crore club.
- Franchise History: The Maddock Horror Comedy Universe was established in 2018 with the first film, Stree. That movie, which starred Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor, opened at ₹6.82 crore and finished with a strong domestic total of ₹167 crore.
- The Lowest Opener: Another film in the series, Bhediya (starring Varun Dhawan), struggled slightly, opening at only ₹7.48 crore. It finished with a domestic total of ₹68.99 crore, partially due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cinema attendance at the time.
Based on first-day earnings, Thamma now holds the rank of the second-highest opener in the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, right after Stree 2.
Ranking Among 2025 Hindi Films
When looking at all the Hindi movies released so far this year (2025), Thamma has secured the third-highest opening day collection.
- Chhaava (₹31 crore): This period drama, also backed by Maddock Films and starring Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika, still holds the top spot for 2025.
- Sikandar (₹26 crore): AR Murugadoss’ action drama, starring Salman Khan, is the second-highest opener.
- Thamma (₹24 crore): It ties for third place with Housefull 5, a comedy headlined by Akshay Kumar.
Overall, Thamma has delivered a very strong box office opening, which is the second-best in its own franchise and the third-best this year. The focus now shifts to how much it can grow over the next few weeks.
