Box Office: ‘Caught Stealing’ Opens with $3.2 Million, While ‘Weapons’ Leads Again

The new releases this weekend — Austin Butler’s Caught Stealing, Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman’s The Roses, and The Toxic Avenger remake — could not beat Weapons, which continues to dominate the box office for the fourth weekend in a row. The Labor Day holiday marks the end of the summer season, but Weapons is still holding strong.

Caught Stealing Opening Day

Sony Pictures’ crime thriller Caught Stealing, directed by Darren Aronofsky, earned $3.2 million on Friday including Thursday previews from 3,578 theaters. The movie is expected to collect around $9.5 million over the four-day holiday weekend. Made on a $40 million budget, the film has received good reviews but opened below expectations. Audience response is decent, with a CinemaScore grade of “B.”

The Roses Struggles to Impress

Searchlight Pictures’ dark comedy The Roses, directed by Jay Roach, features Benedict Cumberbatch, Olivia Colman, Andy Samberg, Kate McKinnon, and Allison Janney. The film collected $2.4 million from 2,700 theaters on Friday and is likely to make around $7 million over four days. It received mixed reviews, though viewers gave it a CinemaScore “B+.”

Jaws Makes a Splash Again

Universal Pictures re-released Steven Spielberg’s classic Jaws to celebrate its 50th anniversary. The film still pulled a crowd, earning $3 million on Friday from 3,200 theaters. It is expected to make $9.7 million during the long weekend — more than both Caught Stealing and The Roses. It’s an impressive return for a movie that was re-released just three years ago in 2022.

Weapons Remains at No. 1

Warner Bros. and New Line’s horror film Weapons continues its strong run at the box office. The film added $2.7 million on Friday, dropping just 42% from last week. It is projected to reach $134 million by Labor Day and is close to overtaking Final Destination Bloodlines ($138 million) to become one of 2025’s top 15 biggest hits.

Freakier Friday Still Going Strong

Disney’s Freakier Friday, starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis, continues to perform well in its fourth week. It made $1.7 million on Friday and is expected to reach $82 million domestically by Monday.

The Toxic Avenger Opens Quietly

The new unrated version of The Toxic Avenger, starring Peter Dinklage, Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, and Elijah Wood, opened in 1,995 theaters. It earned about $650,000 on Friday and is expected to stay outside the top 10.
